Overview

In late July 2026 Lagos launched a dual effort to improve municipal waste management. On 25 July the Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy unveiled the "Pee‑Po‑to‑Power Lagos" pilot, installing a 30‑cubic‑metre anaerobic biodigester at a public toilet in Ojota. The unit is intended to turn human waste from roughly 350 daily users into clean biogas, and a public walk highlighted sanitation travel distances and promoted behavioural change.

Three days later the Lagos State Government formally reopened the rehabilitated Road E at the Olusosun Disposal Facility, adding new disposal platforms to speed waste evacuation after heavy rains had damaged the route. The rebuild, carried out by Zoomlion Nigeria under a corporate‑social‑responsibility programme, also includes new Transfer Loading Stations at Olusosun and Solous III, each capable of handling 2,500 metric tonnes of waste per day. Olusosun now processes about half of Lagos’s municipal solid waste. Officials reiterated plans for additional material‑recovery sites, further waste‑to‑energy and biogas plants, the acquisition of more compactor trucks, and the eventual de‑commissioning of the current disposal site over the next three years.
