Lagos State aims to double food self-sufficiency to 40%

The Lagos State government has launched a five-year Agricultural and Food Systems Roadmap intended to increase food self-sufficiency from approximately 20 per cent to 40 per cent. Speaking at the 2026 Eko World Food Day in Ikeja, Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat emphasized that the strategy focuses on maximizing existing land through increased production, processing, and improved distribution rather than simply expanding farmland.

Key components of the plan include the development of a central food security and logistics hub at Ketu-Ereyun, Epe, alongside mid-level agricultural produce hubs and last-mile distribution networks. These interventions aim to reduce food waste and minimize the role of intermediaries to make food more affordable for residents.

The state has also renewed its partnership with the BATN Foundation to support farmer livelihoods and strengthen the broader food system through innovation and human capital development.
