Lagos State food security initiatives
Overview
Lagos State has launched a five-year Agricultural and Food Systems Roadmap designed to increase food self-sufficiency from 20% to 40%.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat have outlined a strategy that focuses on maximizing existing land through enhanced production, processing, and distribution rather than solely expanding farmland. The plan utilizes a three-tier structure consisting of a central food security and logistics hub at Ketu-Ereyun, Epe, mid-level agro-produce hubs, and last-mile distribution networks. These measures aim to reduce food waste and minimize the influence of intermediaries to improve affordability for the state’s population.
Additionally, the state has renewed its partnership with the BATN Foundation to support farmer livelihoods and strengthen the food system through innovation and human capital development.
