Lagos declares waste management emergency as Benue launches development plan

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has declared a “small state of emergency” regarding waste management to combat indiscriminate dumping and collection challenges. Following an inspection of the Olusosun dumpsite, the Governor announced plans to increase waste truck capacity and activate new reception facilities in Alimosho, Ikorodu, Epe, and Badagry. The state intends to build transfer loading stations and material recovery sites to improve turnaround times. Additionally, the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has begun enforcement actions, including the arrest of a resident for dumping refuse into drainage channels.

In separate developments, the Lagos State Government has initiated consultative forums across its five divisions to gather resident input for the 2027 budget, emphasizing the prioritization of needs based on available resources.

In Benue State, Governor Hyacinth Alia has introduced a 30-year development plan aimed at ensuring governance continuity and economic transformation. This follows a summit where the state signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Hudson Global Consulting to implement strategic investment plans, including efforts to attract $5 billion in investment.
