Lagos State budgetary planning and implementation
Overview
In August 2026, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu requested that the State House of Assembly reorder the 2026 ‘Budget of Shared Prosperity.’ This request sought to redirect resources toward priority areas, including projects nearing completion and environmental concerns like flood control, following a recorded budget performance of approximately 69 per cent.
By early September 2026, the state transitioned into consultative processes for the 2027 budget. The Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget launched a five-day forum rotating through the five IBILE divisions: Ikeja, Badagry, Ikorodu, Lagos Island, and Epe. Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Ope George, stated that these annual engagements serve as a platform for inclusive governance, allowing residents, traditional rulers, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders to contribute to development priorities and fiscal planning.
On September 9, 2026, Governor Sanwo-Olu declared a “small state of emergency” regarding waste management to address indiscriminate dumping and collection challenges. Following an inspection of the Olusosun dumpsite, the Governor announced plans to increase waste truck capacity and activate new reception facilities in Alimosho, Ikorodu, Epe, and Badagry. The state intends to construct transfer loading stations and material recovery sites to improve turnaround times. Concurrently, the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has initiated enforcement actions, including the arrest of a resident for dumping refuse into drainage channels.
