Lagos authorities seal illegal dumping sites and reopen steel firms after compliance

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) sealed shops, warehouses and market stalls along the Tejuosho‑Ojuelegba corridor and the Ijesha Bus Stop‑Cele Under Bridge area after repeated illegal waste dumping, warning that the premises will stay closed until sanitation standards are met. LAWMA’s Managing Director Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin said the action was needed to protect public health and restore order.

The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) lifted the closure of six iron‑and‑steel manufacturers in the Odogunyan industrial corridor of Ikorodu after the firms complied with environmental requirements and signed memoranda of understanding. General Manager Dr Babatunde Ajayi highlighted that the firms had addressed emissions of dust and particulate matter that threatened air quality and public health.

The Lagos State Government also commissioned a rehabilitated access road and new disposal platforms at the Olusosun dumpsite, improving waste‑evacuation capacity. The project, carried out with Zoomlion Nigeria Limited under a public‑private partnership, aims to reduce turnaround time for waste trucks.

Residents in Ajao Estate protested a proposed increase in monthly waste‑collection fees, citing months of irregular service, while an editorial called for a comprehensive audit of private waste‑collection operators to address systemic failures in Lagos’s waste‑management system.
