Lagos to deploy waste marshals and transition to waste-to-energy plants

Lagos State is implementing new strategies to address its waste management crisis, including the deployment of Waste Marshals and a transition toward a circular economy. The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) plans to station marshals at strategic locations to monitor and enforce regulations against indiscriminate dumping on roads, bridges, and drainage channels.

To modernize infrastructure, the state intends to phase out aging landfills in favor of material recovery facilities and waste-to-energy plants. LAWMA Managing Director Muyiwa Gbadegesin noted that several major dump sites are approaching the end of their operational life. Current efforts include engineering interventions to extend landfill capacity and the development of transfer loading stations at Olusosun and Solous. The Olusosun facility is expected to process 2,500 tonnes of waste daily in a controlled indoor environment.
