Lagos Waste Management Authority intensifies crackdown on illegal dumping

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has intensified its crackdown on environmental violations through both enforcement actions and calls for public assistance. In the Ayobo-Ipaja axis, LAWMA sealed four facilities—Rock of Age Plaza, Ajerogun I Market, Ayobo Market, and Oba Plaza—following repeated infractions and failure to comply with environmental directives. This enforcement follows a series of waste evacuation operations in areas including Oluwaga Bus Stop and Ayobo Road to prevent cleared sites from becoming illegal dumping hotspots.

Additionally, LAWMA Managing Director Muyiwa Gbadegesin commended media reporting regarding indiscriminate waste dumping in Ibeju-Lekki. While praising the documentation of such incidents, Gbadegesin noted that effective enforcement requires more specific details. He urged the public and media to capture identifying information, such as vehicle registration numbers, company logos, and exact timestamps, to assist in tracking perpetrators, while advising citizens not to put themselves at risk during documentation.
