Lagos Waste Management Authority seals markets, reopens Olusosun landfill road
The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) intensified its sanitation crackdown on Saturday, sealing a number of markets and shopping complexes in the Ikotun‑Igando axis of Alimosho Local Government Area. The operation targeted facilities such as Owode Market, Omo Oba Shopping Complex, Oja Oba Market and several others after traders repeatedly dumped refuse on road medians despite warnings and prior sensitisation campaigns. LAWMA Managing Director Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin said the closures will remain in effect until the premises comply with state environmental laws.
In a separate effort, LAWMA announced the rehabilitation and reopening of Road E at the Olusosun Landfill in Ojota. The repair, carried out by ZoomLion Nigeria Limited on a corporate‑social‑responsibility basis, is expected to ease the movement of waste‑compactor trucks and improve overall waste‑disposal operations. Dr. Gbadegesin clarified that the landfill has not been shut down and that the upgraded access will help clear the backlog of refuse that has plagued Lagos streets and markets.
