Lai Chau, Vietnam Flood Kills Mother and Two Children, Leaves Dozens Injured
On the morning of July 17, a flash flood hit the Chít village in Mường Than district, Lai Chau province. The surge swept away a family, leaving survivor Nguyễn Thanh Hải, 35, with severe injuries while his wife and two young children drowned. Hải was rescued after sending his location to a friend; rescuers formed a human chain to pull him to safety.
The disaster claimed seven lives, injured eight, and left one person still missing. Five days later, families continue to search for the missing, holding makeshift altars in the ruins of their homes. Authorities and the community have begun recovery efforts. Soldiers from the 880th Regiment of the Lai Chau Military Command started rebuilding a resettlement area on July 20, completing two house foundations within a day and aiming to finish the project by early September. Aid distribution points have been set up at local schools, and many residents remain dependent on relief supplies while awaiting new housing.
The flood’s impact underscores the vulnerability of remote mountain communities to extreme weather and the ongoing need for coordinated rescue, relief, and reconstruction measures.
