Lai Chau flash floods kill four, leave dozens missing, cause widespread damage

Heavy rain on July 15‑17 2026 triggered flash floods and landslides in Muong Than commune, Lai Chau province, northern Vietnam. At least four people were confirmed dead, several injured and up to seven people remain missing. The disaster destroyed 13 houses completely, damaged many more and forced the evacuation of about 385 residents, while roughly 4,600 people in seven villages were isolated. Major routes National Highway 32, Highway 279 and Highway 12 were cut off, disrupting transport. About 200 ha of rice and other crops were flooded and the economic loss was initially estimated at over 120 billion VND (≈US$4.8 million). Provincial authorities declared a state of emergency, mobilising roughly 500 rescue personnel including police, army, civil servants and local volunteers, and deployed machinery to clear roads and search for the missing. An additional three bodies were later recovered, confirming the death toll of four, and rescue operations involving more than 500 responders continue.
