Lai Chau, Vietnam flood claims 9 dead as last victim recovered

Heavy rain caused flash floods and landslides on July 17 in Mường Than commune, Lai Châu province, Vietnam. The disaster killed nine people, injured nine, and left about 200 households affected, including 24 families who lost their homes entirely. More than 300 ha of rice, flowers and aquaculture were swept away, and infrastructure such as roads, schools and power lines suffered extensive damage. The provincial authorities estimate total losses at roughly 270 billion VND.

On July 24, police forces recovered the final missing victim, identified as 52‑year‑old Đỗ Thị Hoa, whose body was found in the Mường Mít reservoir. Over 700 police, army and militia personnel were deployed to conduct search‑and‑rescue, clear debris, distribute relief kits and relocate residents. The central government approved an emergency assistance package of 50 billion VND for Lai Châu, and Deputy Prime Minister Hồ Quốc Dũng visited the site on July 21 to assess the response and discuss plans for rebuilding, including a new resettlement area for the displaced families.
