A Luger P06 pistol discovered at the bottom of Lake Annecy may provide a breakthrough in the 2012 Chevaline quadruple murder investigation. The weapon was recovered by British tourists on August 20, 2026, while they were swimming in the lake.

The 2012 killings in Haute-Savoie resulted in the deaths of Saad al-Hilli, his wife Iqbal, their mother-in-law Suhaila al-Allaf, and local cyclist Sylvain Mollier. The shooter has never been identified. The Nanterre prosecutor's office confirmed that investigations are underway to determine if the recovered pistol is the same model used in the crime, noting that fragments of a rare Luger grip were previously found at the original scene.

Forensic analysis of the submerged weapon is expected to be complex and may take several weeks due to its condition after being underwater. The discovery has renewed hope of identifying the perpetrator of the attack, which involved 21 shots fired in under two minutes.
