Chevaline murder investigation weapon discovery

Overview

In late August 2026, a Luger P06 pistol was discovered by British tourists at the bottom of Lake Annecy, France. The weapon was found partially buried in sand approximately five feet below the surface by a snorkeler.

Authorities are investigating whether this antique firearm is linked to the 2012 Chevaline quadruple murder, an unsolved case in which Saad al-Hilli, his wife Iqbal, their mother-in-law Suhaila al-Allaf, and cyclist Sylvain Mollier were killed. The discovery is considered a potential breakthrough because fragments of a rare Luger grip were previously found at the original crime scene.

Forensic analysis of the corroded weapon is expected to be a complex process. The location of the find is noted to be near the campsite where the al-Hilli family had stayed prior to the 2012 attack.
