Lake Balaton sees improved rail punctuality and shifting tourism trends
The summer season at Lake Balaton saw improvements in railway services and shifting tourism patterns. MÁV Group CEO Zsolt Hegyi reported a 7 percent increase in train punctuality on the northern shore, attributed to the deployment of high-performance locomotives, revised locomotive change technologies at Balatonfüred, and simplified schedules. These services will continue into the autumn season, including the Levendula IC service and extended weekend trains.
Tourism trends at the lake are evolving, with Tamás Fekete of the Balaton Tourism Association noting that while water quality remained high despite drought conditions, visitor behavior is changing. Travelers are opting for shorter, more frequent visits, and heatwaves have shifted activity to early morning and late evening hours.
While many visitors noted that prices for food and services remained stable compared to previous years, some reported dissatisfaction due to lower water levels and a significant increase in mosquito populations, which impacted the overall holiday experience for some.
