Lake Balaton sees rise in accommodation stays despite falling paid beach attendance
Tourism patterns at Lake Balaton show a divergence between accommodation usage and paid beach attendance. While domestic guest numbers at local accommodations rose by 1.8 percent compared to the previous year, visitor numbers at major paid beaches have declined. Specifically, the Nagystrand in Siófok saw a 20 percent drop in visitors, and the Sóstó paid beach experienced a 10 percent decrease.
Tourism expert Róbert Richárd Kiss suggests this trend does not indicate a regional crisis but rather a shift in consumer behavior. Guests are increasingly opting for free beaches, utilizing hotel wellness facilities instead of paying for beach entry, or engaging in alternative activities. The decline in revenue for paid beaches in Siófok is estimated to reach approximately 70 million forints.
