Lake Balaton sees rise in cycling tourism and luxury development
The Lake Balaton region is experiencing a structural shift in its tourism economy, driven by a significant rise in cycling and active recreation. While general visitor numbers showed stagnant growth of 0.6% in the first half of 2024, bicycle tourism grew by 3.1%, with certain hubs like Szántódpuszta seeing double-digit increases. This trend is supported by infrastructure developments and services like Balaton Bike Tour and BalatonBike365, which have helped establish a second peak season outside of the traditional summer months.
Simultaneously, the real estate landscape in the region is undergoing major changes. In Fonyód, developer Cordia has commenced construction on ‘The View’, a 99-unit premium residential project designed by FBIS Architects. The development, located directly on the waterfront, has become a point of local contention. While intended as a high-yield investment and luxury residence, the project faces opposition from residents who have historically used the site as a free, natural recreational green space and unofficial beach area.
