Lake Balaton tourism and development trends

The Lake Balaton region is experiencing a shift toward active recreation and cycling tourism. Early reports highlight the availability of family-friendly routes, such as a 14-kilometer loop near Keszthely and Gyenesdiás that utilizes asphalt paths and forest roads to connect sites like the Festetics Palace.

This trend has evolved into a broader structural shift in the local tourism economy. While overall visitor growth has remained relatively stagnant, bicycle tourism has seen significant increases, with some hubs reporting double-digit growth. This rise in cycling is supported by infrastructure and services that have helped establish a second peak season outside of the traditional summer months.

Alongside this growth in tourism, the region is seeing increased luxury real estate development. In Fonyód, the construction of ‘The View’, a 99-unit premium residential project, has become a point of local contention as residents oppose the development of a site previously used as a free, natural recreational green space and unofficial beach.
