Lake Ceresio passes water quality test as Lake Maggiore shows major pollution

The 2026 Goletta dei Laghi monitoring campaign by Legambiente reported contrasting results for two Lombardy lakes. All four sampling sites in Lake Ceresio (Lago Ceresio) recorded microbiological values within legal limits, marking the lake as the only Lombard basin where every point met standards. Officials highlighted the improvement at Rio Bolletta, previously classified as heavily polluted, and stressed the need for ongoing vigilance.

Conversely, Lake Maggiore (Lago Maggiore) showed severe water quality issues. Of six sampled points along the Lombard shore, five exceeded legal limits—three were deemed strongly polluted and two polluted—leaving only one site within the limits. The Boesio tributary remained heavily polluted, prompting calls from Legambiente representatives for deeper investigation and coordinated action with upstream municipalities and Swiss partners. Water service operator Alfa affirmed that its treatment plants comply with regulations, while local authorities proposed a joint discussion table to address possible irregular discharges.
