Lake County FL, Hall County GA launch school bus camera programs to catch illegal passers

Lake County School District in Florida is installing exterior cameras on all 240 school buses starting Aug. 10, the first day of the new school year. The system, provided by Verra Mobility, records vehicles that pass a bus while its stop arm and red lights are extended. After an initial tolerance period with only educational notices, violations will be cited by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and fined $200 for passing on the outside of the bus or $400 for passing on the inside. The program incurs no cost to the district or taxpayers because Verra Mobility supplies and maintains the equipment.

Hall County, Georgia, is relaunching its stop‑arm camera program for the 2026‑27 school year, equipping 50 buses initially. The cameras, also supplied by Verra Mobility, capture images and video of vehicles that illegally pass a stopped bus. After an eight‑week warning phase, violators may face civil fines of up to $1,000 under Georgia law, with citations mailed to vehicle owners. Revenue from the fines will fund camera maintenance and program costs, and any surplus will be used for other district needs.
