Lambayeque dengue death toll rises to 11

The death toll from dengue in the Lambayeque region of Peru has risen to 11 following the deaths of a mother and her 20-year-old son in the Lagunas district. Health authorities reported that the victims did not seek timely medical attention, opting instead for medication from a local pharmacy.

While the mother was treated at Hospital Las Mercedes for severe dengue, the son was treated at Hospital Almanzor, where the National Institute of Health (INS) confirmed he also suffered from leptospirosis. Medical officials are investigating whether the mother also had leptospirosis.

The regional health management (Geresa) reports a total of 3,676 confirmed cases in the region. The most affected districts include Chiclayo, Motupe, Olmos, José Leonardo Ortiz, La Victoria, Jayanca, and Lagunas. Authorities are urging citizens to avoid self-medication and to seek immediate professional medical care when experiencing symptoms such as fever, muscle pain, or pain behind the eyes.
