Lamborghini CEO defends EV delay, opts for plug‑in hybrids

Lamborghini unveiled its first electric model, the Lanzador, about three years ago with an original launch target of 2028. The company has now pushed back the debut of the Lanzador and an electric version of the Urus SUV to at least 2030. CEO Stephan Winkelmann told CNBC that the decision to shift from a fully electric supercar to a plug‑in hybrid was "the right way" for the brand, citing a slow‑rising acceptance curve for electric vehicles among its customers, particularly in the United States. He emphasized that Lamborghini is not anti‑EV but wants to wait until demand justifies a pure‑electric supercar, noting that rival Ferrari currently faces intense scrutiny.

Winkelmann said each manufacturer must choose its own strategy based on market observation, and Lamborghini believes a hybrid approach aligns better with its clientele’s preferences at present.
