Lamborghini marks 50 years of Super SUV development from 1977 Cheetah to Urus SE hybrid

Lamborghini first entered the SUV market in 1977 with the Cheetah prototype shown at the Geneva Motor Show, followed by the LM001 and the production‑ready LM002 in 1986. The LM002, equipped with a front‑mounted V12 taken from the Countach Quattrovalvole, could exceed 200 km/h and was produced until 1992, with 301 units built, establishing the brand’s Super SUV concept.

The lineage continued with the Urus, unveiled as a concept in 2012 and launched in production form in 2017. The Urur introduced Lamborghini’s first twin‑turbo V8, rear‑wheel steering and the Tamburo driving‑dynamics selector, marrying super‑car performance with SUV versatility. Special variants such as the Urus Performante (record‑setting at Pikes Peak) and the Urus S balanced speed and luxury, while the Urus SE, announced in 2024, became the first plug‑in hybrid Super SUV, highlighting Lamborghini’s move toward decarbonisation. Limited editions, including the Art Basel Miami Beach 2024 capsule and the “Tettonero” capsule revealed at Milan Design Week 2026, as well as a police‑spec version for Italy’s State Police, demonstrate the model’s exclusivity and broader applications. The Urus’s success spurred significant expansion of Lamborghini’s Sant’Agata Bolognese plant, reinforcing the brand’s position in the high‑performance SUV segment.
