Lamia General Hospital facilitates major organ donation
A 36-year-old nurse from Lamia has donated her organs following her death due to a brain aneurysm. After medical staff at the General Hospital of Lamia were unable to reverse her condition, her mother consented to the donation, facilitating a major medical operation to provide life-saving organs to compatible recipients.
The procedure, which began in the early hours of October 8, 2026, involved a coordinated effort between medical teams from five different hospitals. The organs successfully harvested included the heart, liver, kidneys, lungs, and corneas.
Participating medical units included teams from Turin, Italy, as well as the Onassis and Evangelismos hospitals in Athens, and the Hippokrateio and Papageorgiou hospitals in Thessaloniki. Hospital Administrator Panagiotis Lachlali described the coordinated action as a significant example of humanity and medical excellence.
