Organ donation operations in Greece

Overview

Recent reports highlight significant organ donation operations in Greece involving multiple medical institutions.

In early October 2026, a 36-year-old nurse in Lamia passed away due to a brain aneurysm. Following her death, her mother consented to an organ donation that involved a coordinated effort between medical teams from five different hospitals, including facilities in Turin, Italy, and several cities in Greece such as Athens and Thessaloniki. The harvested organs included the heart, liver, kidneys, lungs, and corneas.

By mid-October 2026, another major donation occurred in Athens after a 29-year-old man died from a massive cerebral hemorrhage. Supervised by the National Transplant Organization (EOM), this operation provided organs to six recipients. The donor’s heart and lungs were sent to the Onassis Cardiac Surgery Center, his liver was transported to Italy, and his kidneys were distributed to patients in Athens and Thessaloniki. His corneas were also transferred to the Gennimatas General Hospital Eye Bank.
