Surabaya explosion damages dozens of buildings and injures five
A powerful explosion occurred on Tuesday morning, October 6, 2026, at the Nasi Tempong Sri Dewi restaurant in the San Antonio Pakuwon City commercial area of Surabaya, East Java. The blast, which took place around 07:11 WIB, is suspected to have been caused by a leak in a 50-kilogram LPG piping system during cooking preparations.
Five workers sustained injuries, including severe burns ranging from 13 to 25 percent. Three victims are receiving intensive care at RSUD Dr. Soetomo, having undergone surgery for burns and potential blast injuries or inhalation trauma. Two other victims were treated at RSUD Haji Surabaya.
The explosion caused widespread physical damage, affecting between 41 and 58 buildings in the vicinity. Reports indicate the damage includes 42 shophouses and 16 residential homes, with some structures suffering severe damage while others experienced broken glass and minor structural issues. Additionally, at least eight vehicles, including cars and motorcycles, were damaged by the blast or falling debris.
Police, including the Gegana team from Polda Jatim and Inafis, have secured the scene to investigate the exact cause. Authorities confirmed that while three 50-kg LPG cylinders were found at the site, the cylinders themselves did not explode; rather, the leak in the connection or piping triggered the incident.
