Surabaya restaurant LPG explosion

Overview

On October 6, 2026, a powerful explosion occurred at the Nasi Tempong Sri Dewi restaurant in the San Antonio Pakuwon City commercial area of Surabaya, East Java. The blast is suspected to have been caused by a leak in a 50-kilogram LPG piping system during cooking preparations. The incident injured five workers, some of whom required intensive care and surgery for severe burns and inhalation trauma.

The explosion caused extensive property damage, affecting between 41 and 58 buildings, including 42 shophouses and 16 residential homes, as well as at least eight vehicles. While three 50-kg LPG cylinders were present at the site, authorities confirmed the cylinders did not explode; instead, a leak in the connection or piping triggered the blast.

Following the incident, the Surabaya Fire and Rescue Service (DPKP) issued safety warnings regarding the risks of LPG leaks. Officials noted that because LPG is heavier than air, it can accumulate in low-lying areas, creating high explosion risks if ignited. The DPKP provided guidelines for residents, such as moving cylinders to well-ventilated outdoor areas and avoiding electrical switches or open flames when a leak is suspected.
