Öland beaches see mass die-off of moon jellyfish
The summer holidays of the Swedish Royal Family on the island of Öland have been impacted by an unusual natural phenomenon. Dead moon jellyfish have accumulated along the island's eastern coastline, affecting the vacation experience for Princess Estelle and Prince Oscar.
Marine biologist Anna Wall from the Kalmar district administration explained that the mass die-off and subsequent beaching of the jellyfish were caused by strong winds, currents, and high waves. This occurrence is considered unusual, as moon jellyfish typically die during the autumn months when water temperatures decrease and food supplies become limited.
