Moon jellyfish accumulation on Öland

Overview

Large numbers of dead moon jellyfish have washed up along the eastern coastline of the Swedish island of Öland, where members of the Swedish Royal Family, including Princess Estelle and Prince Oscar, are spending their summer holidays.

Marine biologist Anna Wall of the Kalmar district administration noted that the accumulation of jellyfish is an unusual occurrence for this time of year, as these creatures typically die during autumn due to decreasing water temperatures and limited food supplies. Wall clarified that the phenomenon is being driven by strong winds, currents, and high waves blowing the jellyfish ashore, rather than a mass die-off, stating, “There are many, many more in the sea. If all the jellyfish had died, that would obviously be a problem. But that is not the case now.”
