Land Rover unveils road-legal Defender Dakar SUV

Land Rover has unveiled the Defender Dakar, a limited-production, road-legal SUV inspired by the brand’s D7X-R competition vehicle, which won the Stock class at the 2026 Dakar Rally. The design preview was presented during Monterey Car Week.

Built on the D7x architecture and based on the Defender Octa, the Dakar model features a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine producing 635 hp and 750 Nm of torque. Unlike the rally version, which is restricted by racing regulations, the road-going model utilizes the engine's full potential.

Key mechanical upgrades include a coil spring suspension system paired with Bilstein advanced dampers, a wider track, and increased ground clearance. The vehicle is equipped with 20-inch forged wheels and 35-inch all-terrain tires. Specialized driving modes include ‘Dunes’, ‘Gravel’, and a unique ‘Flight Mode’ designed to manage suspension stability during jumps and uneven landings.

Exterior features include a fixed metal roof with integrated light pods, carbon-fiber components such as the bonnet and air intakes, and exposed rivet wheel arches. The interior follows a 2+2 seating layout with racing-style front seats and optional four-point harnesses. Reservations are expected to open in early 2027, with full technical specifications to be announced during the 2027 Dakar Rally.
