Land Rover Defender model developments
Overview
Developments regarding Land Rover Defender variants have highlighted both aftermarket electric conversions and new factory-produced high-performance models.
A Dutch firm, The Landrovers, developed the Panterra, an electric restomod featuring a 200 kWh battery pack and four independent electric motors. This conversion claims a WLTP-tested range of up to 605 km and is priced from €490,000.
Land Rover has leveraged racing success to introduce the Defender Dakar, a limited-production, road-legal SUV. This follows the dominance of the Defender D7X-R competition vehicle, which secured first, second, and fourth places in the new Stock-class at the 2026 Dakar Rally. Driven by Rokas Baciuška, the D7X-R covered 24,000 km to prove the capability of production-derived models against high-cost prototypes.
Inspired by the D7X-R and based on the Defender Octa, the Dakar was previewed during Monterey Car Week. Positioned as a flagship above the Octa, it is built on the D7x architecture and features a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine producing approximately 626 to 635 horsepower and 750 Nm of torque. Mechanical upgrades include a wider track, increased ground clearance, and a transition from air suspension to coil springs paired with Bilstein advanced dampers. The vehicle sits on 35-inch all-terrain tires with 20-inch forged wheels and includes a carbon-fiber bonnet, roof-mounted auxiliary lights, and reinforced underbody protection. The interior offers a 2+2 seating layout with racing-style seats and optional four-point harnesses. Specialized driving modes include Dunes, Gravel, and a unique ‘Flight Mode’ designed to stabilize the vehicle during high-speed jumps and landings. The model has an estimated price of approximately $170,000.
