Åland sees highest tax refunds and arrears in Finland

The Finnish Tax Administration has announced significant regional disparities in tax refunds and arrears. Residents of Åland are seeing the highest averages in both categories. Between July and September, the average tax arrears in Åland reached 2,253 euros, significantly higher than the 1,393 euros seen in Uusimaa.

According to Tax Administration Chief Inspector Irene Laine, these trends in Åland are driven by higher levels of capital income, such as dividends, as well as foreign income and a high number of entrepreneurs. Åland has historically stood out from mainland Finland in these metrics.

On Thursday, September 3, the administration will issue tax refunds totaling 829 million euros to 939,000 customers. The average refund across the country is 653 euros, with the highest averages in Åland (699 euros) and Uusimaa (695 euros), and the lowest in South Savo (582 euros) and North Karelia (594 euros).
