Conakry landfill collapse kills at least 30 people FAST-MOVING
At least 30 people died and 22 others were injured, including six in serious condition, after a massive mound of waste collapsed at the Dar-es-Salam landfill in Conakry, Guinea. The incident occurred around 02:00 local time on Sunday, August 23, following heavy overnight rainfall that triggered the landslide. The collapse buried several nearby homes and makeshift shelters in the Gbessia commune.
Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah visited the site to oversee rescue operations, which involve the military, the Red Cross, and local authorities using heavy machinery to search for survivors. While the government has mobilized resources to assist the injured and provide medical care at Donka University Hospital, search efforts continue for those potentially still trapped under the debris.
The tragedy has drawn criticism from opposition leader Cellou Dalein Diallo, who noted that the landfill was scheduled for permanent closure on the very day of the disaster. This is not the first such event at this location; a similar landslide in 2017 resulted in at least nine deaths. Authorities had recently ordered evacuations and security measures around the site due to known risks of instability.
