Conakry landfill landslide disaster

Overview

A massive landslide at the Dar-es-Salam landfill in the Gbessia commune of Conakry, Guinea, has caused significant casualties and destruction. Triggered by heavy overnight rainfall around 02:00 local time on August 23, the collapse of the refuse mountain buried several nearby residential structures, including tents and shacks.

Reports indicate the death toll has reached at least 30 people, with 22 injuries reported, including six individuals in serious condition. Rescue operations involving the military, civil protection service, the Red Cross, and medical teams continue as search efforts attempt to locate individuals potentially still buried under the debris. Local residents have also joined efforts using heavy machinery to search for survivors.

Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah has visited the site to oversee emergency responses, while medical care is being provided at the Donka University Hospital (CHU de Donka). The disaster occurred on a day when the landfill was scheduled to begin official closure. While authorities had previously issued warnings and evacuation orders due to landslide risks, the incident has prompted calls from political opposition leader Cellou Dalein Diallo for a transparent investigation, specifically criticizing the delay in closing the site. This tragedy follows a similar landslide at the same location in 2017 that killed 10 people.
