Landfill fire near Ladybank, Scotland continues, smoke warnings

A fire broke out at the Lower Melville Wood landfill near Ladybank in Fife on 12 May and has been burning for more than a week. The blaze, involving recycled material spread over an area of about 200 m by 300 m, prompted an extensive emergency response that at its peak included 12 fire appliances, 60 firefighters and specialist resources.

Firefighters remain on scene, rotating crews and conducting damp‑down operations to control lingering pockets of fire. Smoke from the site has prompted public health advice for nearby residents to keep windows and doors closed and limit outdoor time. Police confirmed the A92 road between Melville Lodges and Ladybank has reopened with a temporary 30 mph speed limit, while the access road to the landfill stays closed. No injuries have been reported and detectives are not treating the incident as suspicious.
