Landkreis Northeim imposes quarantine after equine virus detected

On 30 July 2026 a horse in the Northeim district of Lower Saxony tested positive for the contagious equine anemia virus, a reportable viral disease that affects horses, donkeys, mules and hinnies. The animal was euthanised after severe symptoms and laboratory confirmation.

The district authority established a one‑kilometre quarantine zone around the farm in Salzderhelden. All equids in the area must remain stabled and may leave only with special permission. Owners are required to report their animals for precautionary testing. There is no treatment for the disease; infected animals must be destroyed. The virus is not native to Germany and previous cases have been linked to imported horses.

Human health is not at risk, and the measures aim to prevent further spread among livestock.
