A 28‑year‑old Haflinger mare in Benton County, Minnesota tested positive for equine infectious anemia (EIA) on 29 July 2026. The horse, acquired from a riding‑camp herd, had not been previously Coggins‑tested. After detection, the animal was placed under strict quarantine and a trace investigation began, identifying dozens of potentially exposed horses. Authorities emphasized that EIA is a lifelong, incurable viral disease spread by blood‑feeding insects, contaminated equipment, or direct contact, and that infected horses must be kept at least 200 yards from healthy equids.
The following day, 30 July 2026, a horse in the Northeim district of Lower Saxony, Germany, was confirmed positive for the same contagious equine anemia virus. The animal exhibited severe symptoms and was euthanised. Local officials imposed a one‑kilometre quarantine zone around the farm, requiring all equids to remain stabled and mandating precautionary testing. As in the U.S. case, there is no treatment; infected animals are destroyed to prevent further spread. The German outbreak was linked to imported horses, underscoring the trans‑national risk of the disease. Both incidents highlight ongoing challenges in detecting, containing, and managing EIA across different regions.
