Landslide partially blocks Teesta and Chyakoong rivers in Sikkim
A landslide occurring during the night of September 5 and 6 has partially blocked the Teesta and Chyakoong rivers near the confluence in Mangan, Sikkim. The collapse involved a substantial portion of a hillside along the Naga-Tosa Road in the Naga Forest area, opposite the Theng Tunnel.
While the landslide caused a temporary obstruction and water accumulation in both rivers, the Teesta River's flow has since returned to normal. Both rivers continue to flow partially, though water levels at certain observation points have been reported as muddy.
No injuries or loss of life have been reported. Local authorities, including the Mangan District Administration and police personnel, are continuously monitoring the situation and water levels. The Police Control Room has been instructed to alert vulnerable areas in the lower belt as a precautionary measure while property damage assessments are conducted.
