Lao Cai agricultural products gain value through OCOP program
The ‘One Commune, One Product’ (OCOP) program is driving the value enhancement of local agricultural products in Lao Cai province, Vietnam. By helping producers standardize production processes, improve packaging, and ensure traceability, the initiative is transforming regional specialties into recognized brands.
In Sa Pa, cold-water fish farming, particularly salmon and sturgeon, has become a prominent sector due to the region's natural environment. Thuc Mai Salmon Farm serves as a key example, utilizing the OCOP framework to transition from traditional sales to a professionalized model. The farm now offers a variety of certified products, including salmon fillets, smoked salmon, and salmon crackers, which are marketed through modern retail spaces and trade fairs.
Beyond seafood, the OCOP program supports a diverse range of local goods, including dried buffalo meat, dried horse meat, medicinal herbs, tea, honey, and spices from various cooperatives and households throughout the province.
