L'Aquila councilors urge activation of ‘Strade Sicure’ security operation

Opposition city councilors Enrico Verini and Gianni Padovani have written to Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi to demand the activation of the ‘Strade Sicure’ operation in L'Aquila.

Although the measure was unanimously approved by the City Council in 2024, it has yet to be implemented. The councilors are seeking to unlock the resolution to allow for the deployment of Army resources at key locations to assist in crime prevention, citing a growing sense of insecurity among citizens.

The councilors also criticized the Prefecture's perceived inertia and the ongoing absence of a legitimate municipal police commander. They have requested the Minister's intervention to review the Prefect's position, noting that they may escalate the matter to the President of the Republic if no response is received.
