Limburg forest fire forces evacuations and disrupts rail service

A large forest fire broke out on 3 August 2026 in the protected Oostrum area near Venray in the Dutch province of Limburg. The blaze quickly spread to roughly 100 hectares, driven by high temperatures, strong winds and dry vegetation.

Around 250‑300 firefighters, three Dutch‑army Chinook helicopters equipped with water‑bucket systems, drones and ground crews have been deployed. A firebreak was cut and over 900 000 litres of water were dropped. The cause remains unknown.

Because of the smoke and fire risk, a nearby camping site housing about 300 tourists was evacuated, and train services on the Boxmeer‑Venray line were suspended. Authorities issued a local warning (Nina‑Warnapp) and advised residents to keep windows and doors closed. The smoke plume was detected across the border, prompting odor complaints in the German district of Kleve, though no danger to the population was reported.

The fire is still active but has stabilised as wind speeds eased. Officials warn that increasing heatwaves and drought across Europe raise the likelihood of similar large‑scale forest fires in the future.
