Limburg forest fire response (ongoing)
Overview
On 3 August 2026 a large forest fire erupted in the protected Oostrum area near Venray, Limburg, quickly spreading over about 100 hectares. Roughly 250‑300 firefighters, three Dutch‑army Chinook helicopters with water buckets, drones and ground crews were deployed, dropping more than 900 000 litres of water. A nearby campsite with around 300 tourists was evacuated and train services on the Boxmeer‑Venray line were suspended. Smoke drifted into Germany’s Kleve district, prompting local warnings.
By 5 August the blaze remained contained within established firebreaks, aided by a steady southeast wind. Explosive remnants from World War II were uncovered, leading to the involvement of the Dutch Defence Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit, which began mapping and securing any ordnance. No live explosives have been found, but the risk limits direct access to parts of the forest. Firefighters from the Brabant region continued to assist, though national firefighting capacity was approaching its limit.
The fire was still burning on 5 August but was considered under control; officials said it would take several more days to fully extinguish. Helicopters and drones remained on scene, and evacuation of the campsite and suspension of train services continued. The incident is part of a broader heat‑driven wave of vegetation fires affecting several European countries, underscoring rising wildfire risk amid ongoing heatwaves and drought.
