Large study links excessive screen time to child development risks
A large-scale review published in JAMA Pediatrics, involving data from over 2.8 million children across 64 countries, has linked excessive screen time to various developmental and mental health challenges.
Researchers, led by academics from the University of Calgary, found that intensive use of video games, social media, and streaming services is associated with lower academic achievement and difficulties in language development. The study indicates that the impact of screen time on child development may be as significant as or greater than other established factors, such as socioeconomic status, parental behavior, and premature birth.
In terms of mental health, high levels of digital media exposure were linked to emotional issues, difficulties in peer relationships, anxiety, depression, aggression, and symptoms of ADHD. While the study noted a correlation with lower overall school grades, it did not find a clear link to specific performance in mathematics, reading, or science, which researchers noted may be due to limited existing evidence in those specific areas.
