Largest mushroom fruiting body discovered in China
A massive mushroom fruiting body, Phellinus ellipsoideus, was discovered in 2010 on Hainan Island, China. The non-edible tree fungus measured approximately 10.85 meters in length, 84 cm in width, and 5 cm in thickness, with an estimated weight between 400 and 500 kg. This specimen surpassed previous records held by fungi in the United Kingdom's Kew Gardens.
Beyond individual fruiting bodies, some organisms achieve massive scale through mycelium. In Oregon, USA, the Armillaria ostoyae (honey mushroom) forms a vast underground network in the Blue Mountains, representing a different method of biological expansion.
