Larissa peach producers face severe fruit deformation and crop losses
Officials from the Thessaly Region and the University of Thessaly have conducted inspections in the Larissa regional unit to investigate severe fruit deformation affecting peach production. The issue has been observed in various areas, including Tyrnavos and the Municipality of Tempi, causing significant concern among local farmers.
Reports indicate that despite farmers following cultivation guidelines, losses in some holdings are approaching 100% of marketable production. The problem, initially noted in varieties such as ‘A-37’ and ‘Andros’, has spread to ‘Katerina’, ‘Evert’, and certain Spanish varieties previously considered more resistant.
In addition to fruit deformation, the appearance of dry shoots is threatening the health of the trees and the long-term survival of the plant capital. Preliminary findings suggest the presence of the Fusicoccum fungus, though experts are continuing to investigate other potential contributing factors to determine the exact cause.
