Las Palmas reports economic growth and new energy projects
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is seeing several significant economic and infrastructural developments. The Port of Las Palmas reported a movement of nearly 520,000 tons of fruits and vegetables in the first half of 2026, marking an 8.94% increase compared to the previous year. Banana exports led this growth, accounting for 35% of the total volume.
In energy infrastructure, the Satocan group and DISA have formed a strategic alliance through the company Atlántico Gas Natural, S.L. to establish the first hydrogen plant at the Port of Las Palmas. This project aims to promote clean fuels and will occupy a 3,908-square-meter plot previously managed by BP.
Other local developments include the Las Palmas City Council receiving ten bids for a 96.8 million euro contract to maintain urban green spaces and trees. Additionally, the wholesale company Makro has launched an online marketplace in the Canary Islands, offering over 4,000 professional products for the hospitality sector with delivery times between 7 and 13 days. Meanwhile, the Port Authority of Las Palmas confirmed that Nueva Pescanova has withdrawn its controversial proposal to build a commercial octopus farm on port land.
