Las Rozas shelters care for pets amid Madrid forest fire evacuations
The Spanish Ministry of the Interior announced that evacuation orders will end at 5 p.m. on Tuesday for eight municipalities in the Community of Madrid and five in the province of Ávila. The affected Madrid towns are Cadalso de los Vidrios, Cenicientos, Navalagamella, Navas del Rey, Rozas de Puerto Real, Aldea del Fresno, Chapinería and Colmenar del Arroyo; the Ávila towns are Fresnedilla, Burgohondo, Higuera de las Dueñas, Pedro Bernardo and Navaluenga Sur.
In Las Rozas, the municipal shelter at La Marazuela continues to host families displaced by the forest fires together with their companion animals. More than 70 pets – dogs, cats, a pair of guinea pigs and a canary – are being looked after. Lola Juliá, president of the animal‑welfare group Abrazo Animal, said the organisation provides food, water, bedding, medication and separate spaces so the animals can be cared for while families remain in the shelter.
The shelter’s operations have expanded from a short‑term response to a longer‑term stay, requiring additional supplies such as feeders, drinkers, litter boxes and specialized diets. Families are still awaiting permanent relocation.
