Las Vegas sees rising gaming revenue despite falling airport traffic

Las Vegas is experiencing a complex economic shift characterized by declining airport traffic alongside rising gaming revenues and a heavy entertainment schedule.

Passenger traffic at Harry Reid International Airport fell 7.6% year-over-year in July, following a 9.3% drop in June. This decline was primarily driven by domestic travel, though international passenger volumes rose by approximately 6%. Despite these lower passenger numbers, Nevada's nonrestricted gaming licensees generated $1.388 billion in July, a 2.07% increase compared to the previous year. The Las Vegas Strip specifically contributed approximately $776.3 million in gaming revenue, up 3.64%.

To bolster tourism, the city has scheduled a dense lineup of entertainment for September. Major events include an Usher and Chris Brown R&B tour at Allegiant Stadium and the iHeartRadio Music Festival at T-Mobile Arena, featuring artists such as Cardi B, Snoop Dogg, and Muse. The city is leveraging these high-profile residencies and festivals to offset a year in which total visitors dropped 7.5% to 38.5 million.
