Latin American designers gain international fashion visibility

The fashion industry is highlighting emerging Latin American talent through major international events. In the Dominican Republic, the EmergeRD 2026 platform launched with Spanish designer Ágatha Ruiz de la Prada serving as the international godmother. The initiative, directed by Sócrates McKinney, aims to mentor a new generation of Dominican designers through training and professional industry encounters. The opening event featured a collaboration between Ruiz de la Prada and the Dominican-founded firm Yako New York, showcasing 16 linen pieces produced in Santo Domingo.

In Europe, Ecuadorian designer Neithan Ruiz is making his debut at Milan Fashion Week with his brand, Neithan Herbert. Presenting his Spring/Summer 2027 collection, Ruiz—who is based in Mexico—showcases a design philosophy rooted in his diverse cultural identity. His debut is supported by organizations such as Afro Fashion Week Milano and follows his recent work for the Latin Grammy Awards. Ruiz's career trajectory, moving from the textile markets of Otavalo to the runways of Milan, emphasizes the integration of personal heritage with global high fashion.
