Latin American leaders back Lula in Brazilian elections
Political figures and organizations in Uruguay and Chile have expressed support for Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the Brazilian presidential elections, where he faces Flávio Bolsonaro.
In Uruguay, the Movimiento de Participación Popular (MPP), the majority sector of the Frente Amplio, issued a statement backing the government of Yamandú Orsi while highlighting regional geopolitical implications. The MPP described the Brazilian election as the most significant process for South American countries, asserting that a Lula reelection would prevent direct intervention by the United States in the region.
In Chile, former government spokesperson Camila Vallejo voiced her support for Lula during his campaign closing. Vallejo characterized the election as vital for Latin America, describing Lula as a leader who has maintained respect against U.S. interests and acted as a barrier against the far-right. She emphasized that the outcome affects regional sovereignty, democracy, and social justice.
